A lone figure standing on a ridge at sunrise facing the wind, be strong and courageous

Be Strong And Courageous

God did not tell Joshua to feel brave first. He told him to be strong, and then He gave him the reason.

Be strong and courageous
was not a pep talk.
It was a command,
given to a man
with every reason
to feel small.
Courage is not
having no fear.
It is obedience
with your knees shaking.

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

What does Joshua 1:9 mean?

God commands Joshua to be strong and of a good courage, and the command rests on a promise: “for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” The courage is not self generated. It is borrowed from God’s presence.

How can I be courageous when I still feel afraid?

Feelings were never the requirement. Joshua was told to be strong, not to feel strong. Obedience with shaking knees still counts as courage.
